Reminder to parents of students in Pre-K
Plan ahead!
Virginia State Law requires that all children have a new physical done prior to the start of kindergarten. Physicals done for Pre-K are not acceptable for kindergarten. The form can be submitted to school as soon as it is completed, but must be submitted prior to starting kindergarten.
A 2nd Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine is now required prior to starting Kindergarten, effective March 3, 2010. If your child has not already had their 2nd MMR, that will also need to be given.
Please plan ahead if your child has a physical scheduled this spring. Doctor's offices tend to be very busy at the end of the summer. Have your doctor complete the State of Virginia School Entrance Physical Form, which is available on our school web site or give me a call and I can send one home with your child.
If you have any questions, please call the clinic.

Will your child be in 6th grade next year?
Plan ahead!
Virginia State Law requires that all students have a Tdap (DPT) booster shot prior to starting 6th grade. Please check with your child's doctor regarding this booster shot, as well as any other required immunizations. The shot is generally given as soon as your child turns 11 years old.
Your child must have this booster shot before the first day of school in August. Medical forms can be turned into the clinic as soon as your child gets the booster shot.
Doctor's offices and local health departments are likely to be busy right before school starts. Please plan ahead and make sure that your child has the required immunizations before the start of school. All required vaccines are available free from your local health department. Please call them to check on hours.
Children, who do not have information on file in the school clinic on the first day of school, will be sent home and be unable to return to school until they receive the booster shot. This is a state mandate and there is no grace period. The state health department does audit our records routinely.
If you have any questions, please call the school clinic.

Encourage your child to wash their hands often with soap and water. They should scrub their entire hands for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday to themselves twice).
When they use hand sanitizer instead of soap and water, encourage them to use enough to get their entire hands wet and then rub until dry. According to CDC guideline, if their hands are dry within 10 - 15 seconds, they aren't using enough.
Teach your child to try not to touch their face - eyes, nose and mouth - not an easy thing to do. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their face.
Encourage your child not to share drinks or water bottles.
Teach your child to cover coughs or sneezes with tissue, or their arm or sleeve when tissue is not available.
Talk to your child's doctor about whether they should get a vaccine for seasonal flu and for the H1N1 flu this fall.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gounley, the school nurse at 596-2754 ext. 227.

Does your child use an inhaler?
If your child needs to use an Albuterol Inhaler in school, please be aware that doctor's orders are required. New orders are required each year.
Students in grades 5 through 8 are strongly encouraged to carry their own inhalers in school. They must still have doctor's orders on file, which specifies that they are both capable and responsible for using the inhaler on their own. Parents of children who participate in our middle school sports program are particularly encouraged to talk to their doctor about this. Inhalers that are kept in the clinic are not available during after-school activities.
Medication order forms are available through the clinic, and are also available on the web site. If you have any questions, please contact the school clinic.
