Eighth Grade Civics Project – Contacting Congressional Representatives
Eighth Grade Civics students are in the process of writing emails to be sent to the appropriate member of the House of Representatives. Each student is to send an email to state an opinion on a topic of interest to him/her and list three supporting statements regarding the selected topic. These are to be emailed from home no later than Friday, October 30.
Students will be contacting members of Congress, both houses, at intervals throughout the year. It is not too early for them to be taking an interest in what the government does as it will affect them for the rest of their lives. As government is playing an ever-increasing role in our lives, it is the duty of students as citizens to express their opinions and ideas to the very people elected to represent them. I will review the emails for appropriateness of topic as well as supporting statements, proper addressing of a Congressman, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Students will be expected to bring to class a copy of the email they send as proof of fulfilling this task. Hopefully, each will receive a response from the Congressman or his staff, and this, too, is to be brought to class.
Students have been told that any email correspondence brought to class is to have their email address cut out or marked out. I don’t want their email address and no one else has need of it either. The email copies will not be kept by me. Students will keep their own to begin a correspondence file.
If you have any questions please call me at extension 256.
Thank you!
Mr. Albert
