Updates for the week of August 30
Reminders for the week:
- I will be posting weekly updates to let you know what is going on in our classroom. This is my primary form of communication with you-please check back weekly!
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I hope that everyone had a relaxing summer. I am looking forward to this year and getting to know your children.
- I will not be posting homework on this webpage. Your child is responsible for copying down their homework every morning.
- Do I have any parent that is willing to sort and file Saxon math papers? If so, please send me a note or leave a message on my extension (247). The more volunteers, the quicker the process will be.
- This week I will begin assigning homework. Spelling tests & reading tests will begin on Friday. The Spelling activities worksheet will be sent home today and below.
Spelling Activities
- A spelling pre-test will be given every Monday. If your child gets all of the words correct, they will receive 12 challenge words to study for the test on Friday.
- All homework is to be completed in cursive unless otherwise noted. We also complete class work in cursive.
- I look forward to seeing you at Back to School night this Thursday!

Homework Policy
Homework is given Monday-Thursday nights. Please know that there may be weekend homework such as studying for tests or long-term projects. I try to assign 3 subjects per night, however, sometimes 4 subjects are given. Spelling homework is completed on a weekly basis and will be handed in each Friday morning. More on Spelling activities will be explained below. Homework will begin the week of August 30th.
*In lieu of homework, I will be sending home workbooks that need to be covered. Contact paper works the best on the workbooks. Send in book socks with your child and they will cover their textbooks in class.
Class Work
Students are given independent activities to complete each day. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all class work is completed in the time given. Any work not finished will be sent home for homework over the weekend or if the work needs to be completed ASAP, it may be sent home that evening. Students have a Daily Work Folder to keep track of all assignments. Folders are collected at the end of each day.
Language Arts Spelling Activities: The Spelling activities sheet will go home next Monday. I will also post these activities on the website. They will need to choose activities to add up to 80 points. The different assignments are given points ranging from 10 points to 20 points. Please keep these activities at home. Spelling activities are to be completed in your children’s spelling notebook. All activities are due on Friday morning.
A Spelling Pre-test will be given each Monday. If your child passes this pre-test with a 100%, they will receive a set of challenge words for the week. Spelling pre-tests will begin in August 30th. Spelling homework will begin Monday August 30th.
SUMMER READING: Summer reading projects are due Thursday August 26th. We will complete a project with the note cards from the second book on Thursday. Failure to bring in your projects will result in a zero.
We will continue with the Treasures Reading Series this year. We will begin with our first story First Day Jitters this week. Weekly tests will not begin until the week of August 30th.
Math
We will be using the Saxon Math series starting August 30th. The first week will be spent on reviewing old concepts. Please make sure that your child is studying their addition and subtraction math facts as there will be timed tests given. Math homework is given nightly.
Religion
We are continuing with our series Faith First. Throughout the year, the children will study the liturgical season, the commandments and their meanings, the sacraments, different types of prayer and many other interesting topics.
Science & Social Studies
These subjects will be taught twice a week. Students will keep a folder with assignments and other information. On occasion, I will send the folders home so that you may see any graded assignments.
