                    Service Opportunities
The community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School responds to the Christian call to care for those in need and give to others through the selfless act of service. We encourage students, parents, faculty and staff to give of their time, to serve the community and become a united voice of action. Service opportunities are a valued part of our school curriculum and occur throughout the year.

Poor Clare Aid

The Poor Clare monastery shared property with Our Lady of Mount Carmel School for many years. They recently moved to Barhamsville, VA and although we are separated by distance we remain united in a common faith and mutual friendship. The Poor Clare Sisters pray for our school daily. In the fall, the 8th grade goes to visit them and spends a day doing landscaping projects around the monastery. True to their name, they rely on donations for their food. In

November of each year, OLMC students participate in a food drive where they collect food and take the donations to the Sisters at the end of the week.

100 Can Challenge

The 100 Can Challenge is a classroom contest that kicks off during Catholic Schools Week. Each classroom is encouraged to collect at least 100 non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church social outreach food cupboard. Students, along with their families, often provide an outpouring of generosity during this time that helps to fill the shelves of our church pantry.

Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Program

The Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Program is a national education program and fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association. Our Lady of Mount Carmel students participate in this energetic event as they raise money for heart health awareness. This annual event is held in February and serves to help children with unhealthy hearts, contribute to the community and encourage OLMC students to grow in service.

Children’s Hospital of Kings Daughters

Our Lady of Mount Carmel students work to serve the children being treated at CHKD through charitable service projects throughout the year. OLMC’s Fund a Friend Club serves as the leaders for these projects as they encourage students to collect books, toys and stuffed animals for the children. In addition, students create cards and raise money through bake sales and change drives, to donate to the hospital.

Christian Service Club

The Christian Service Club draws the school families closer together to live out the Christian call to humility and service. This group serves to explore ways for children to put their faith into action, teach service to the students, connect with the church, and gather the school students and families together for a virtuous purpose to live the sacraments. The club welcomes the participation of all OLMC parents and students, and coordinates school-wide service projects including: Pet Pantry collection, Poor Clare food drive, Thanksgiving food bags, Senior Christian Luncheon, Angel Tree, Caroling, Pajama Collection, PORT Assistance, Easter bags and the Respect Life Baby Shower
